What’s Happening Around Orange County This Week

Newport Beach plans new coastal protections, Fashion Island hosts StyleWeek OC, local parks get upgrades and more.

Did you know?

Newport Beach Plans New Flood Protection After Historic Coastal Swells: Following last weekend's powerful surf and flooding along the Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach officials are evaluating additional protections against future coastal storms. The city deployed 25 tractors and 45 pumps during the emergency as seawater flooded streets and threatened beachfront properties. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, officials discussed improvements to drainage, beach protection and erosion management as the city prepares for additional winter storms.

Fashion Island Hosts StyleWeek OC: Fashion Island is hosting StyleWeek OC, bringing fashion shows, designer appearances, industry discussions and special brand events to Newport Beach. The event is partnering with the Newport Beach Film Festival, creating a crossover between fashion and film at one of Orange County's best known shopping destinations. Actor Jamie Chung is among the featured guests.

Costa Mesa Expands Neighborhood Parks: Costa Mesa is moving forward with improvements to two Westside parks. The city recently celebrated the reopening of Ketchum-Libolt Park following an extensive renovation featuring new playground equipment. Officials also approved a community center concept as part of the planned expansion of Shalimar Park. While funding for the proposed community center has not yet been secured, the projects aim to provide additional recreation and gathering spaces for local families.

Major Improvements Coming to Orange County's Randall Preserve: The Randall Preserve, a significant coastal open space area near Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, is moving toward its first phase of improvements following a reported $2 million state funding allocation. The funding is intended to support continued preservation efforts and help advance plans for the protected landscape. The property is an important part of Orange County's remaining coastal habitat, with long term plans focused on conservation and carefully managed public access.
