What’s Happening Around Orange County This Week

A new Laguna Beach landmark opens, Newport Beach expands its drone program, Laguna Niguel prepares for a major development and more.

Did you know?

Laguna Beach Opens Its New $12.8 Million Downtown Promenade: Laguna Beach has officially completed the permanent transformation of Forest Avenue into the Promenade on Forest, replacing what began as a temporary pandemic era closure with a dedicated pedestrian plaza. The $12.8 million project adds permanent outdoor dining, gathering areas, landscaping and space for entertainment and community events in the heart of downtown. The city celebrated the completed project with an official opening ceremony last week.

Newport Beach Expands Police Drone Program: Newport Beach is significantly expanding its police drone program after a recent trial showed drones arriving before officers nearly 65% of the time. The city approved an expansion that will eventually include 10 strategically positioned drone units, plus additional patrol and tactical drones. During a recent three month period, the department deployed drones 912 times for crimes, accidents and other calls, and in nearly 20% of cases the information gathered allowed the call to be cleared without sending a patrol officer.

Laguna Niguel City Center Is Getting Ready to Break Ground: The long planned Laguna Niguel City Center is officially moving toward construction, with the city scheduling a groundbreaking for this month. The project will transform the area surrounding City Hall into a new mixed use destination with residences, restaurants, retail and public gathering spaces. Preliminary site work is expected to begin shortly after the groundbreaking, with major construction underway in spring 2027.

Live Music Returns to Laguna Beach's Irvine Bowl This Weekend: The historic Irvine Bowl is getting new life outside its traditional summer season with the new Concerts in the Canyon series. This weekend pairs live music with Laguna Beach's annual Plein Air Invitational, with Preservation Hall Jazz Band performing Saturday and Aloe Blacc on Sunday. The broader effort is testing whether the 2,600 seat amphitheater can become a more regular year round music and cultural venue rather than sitting largely unused outside the Festival of Arts season.
